Like many other thirteen year olds, Brian is a courageous, brave and smart boy but what distinguishes him from the rest is his powerful self-reliant mind. Although his plane crashes in the middle of nowhere, is alone for 54 days on the verge of starvation, and is left there with the bumming thought of his parents’ divorce, he is able to pick himself up and be productive in order to obtain a chance for survival. This uncommon trait is essential to the story’s plot since his mind was the reason for his survival. Brain managed to not have his thoughts invade his entire body and therefore had motivation to complete important tasks such as finding food, building a shelter, and not giving up once and for all. The strength of Brian’s mind evolves even more as the story unfolds and life gets harder for him. By the end of the story he is not weakened by nature’s harsh obstacles but courageously faces them by putting away the negative thoughts and bring forward the best of his mind. Throughout the story, worrying thoughts about his life at home, the divorce, and the fact that he was stranded and alone did creep upon him from time to time, but he was able to put those thoughts away to have motivation to keep going, to keep trying to survive. In conclusion, the reader is left with the idea that your mind is a powerful force that controls everything. Everything that occurs are the result of one’s thoughts.
